08 Dec Going Viral

Going viral is something that everyone wants to do, but few accomplish. There are many ways to go viral and once you go, there is always that crazy chance your viral opportunity will make you set for life. Now, while going viral is something that most everyone of a certain age has tried to achieve once in their life–especially after hearing that the person who owns Grumpy Cat grosses more in a month than they do all year,it is rare and there are several ways to make it happen.
Going viral can come from a video, pictures, music, etc. There is no “trick” on how to go viral. To be honest, getting your picture professionally taken won’t guarantee you an “Insta famous” status and the adorability of your pet isn’t going to jumpstart your Youtube career. Going viral happens when the video or picture is seen by the right people at the right time and then somehow, by fate or by process, your material is all over social media.
My advice is to start by writing for websites like BuzzFeed that have crazy traffic, but also community pages. Community pages are where anyone can write their own articles with an option by the host to feature them on their home page. I went “viral” on BuzzFeed by writing a simple article: “15 Reasons Why Your Mom Should Be Your Best Friend”. It is just 15 pictures and explanations on why your mom is the best friend you will ever have. The article ended up on their front page and had over 100,000 views by the end of the day. It was posted over a year ago and I still get multiple daily views. While this wasn’t my golden ticket to fame, it did feel good having so many people reading an article I wrote. So, the lesson to going viral can be small or large, but it can make a person feel good either way.
There is no guaranteed way to create viral content. Something funny can happen, you post it, and no one views or in a few months that same post could go viral. To quote Winston Bishop from New Girl “You know what I learned from the Internet? We got nothing to worry about. Everybody has their moment. We might get a cat one day. That cat might play the keyboard. A bear might fall on our trampoline. We don’t need to have it figured out right now. We just need to be patient. Our moments will come.” So, sit back and wait for your moment because your viral moment will come. In the meantime, enjoy and post!
